BMW's latest electric offering, the 2027 iX3, marks a significant expansion of its electric vehicle lineup. This all-new SUV is built upon a revolutionary EV platform, initially previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept. It boasts a potent 463-horsepower all-wheel-drive electric system and offers an exceptional EPA-estimated driving range exceeding 400 miles on a single charge. For those seeking even greater exhilaration, a more powerful M60 variant, delivering 603 horsepower, is also available.
The iX3 distinguishes itself from its gasoline-powered X3 counterpart with a distinctly modern aesthetic, both externally and within its cabin. A striking, uniquely shaped infotainment display takes center stage on the dashboard, complemented by a sleek, expansive 43.0-inch digital instrument cluster positioned at the base of the windshield. This innovative interior layout is anticipated to influence future BMW electric models, offering a glimpse into the brand's evolving design philosophy. For buyers who prefer a sedan, a related electric model, the i3, is expected soon, alongside new gasoline-powered 3-series variants featuring similar stylistic cues.
Details regarding specific trim levels and pricing for the 2027 iX3 are yet to be fully disclosed. However, interested buyers can expect a competitive starting price range of $62,850 to $72,000 for the standard model, with the higher-performance M60 version commanding a premium. Further information on available packages and customization options will likely be released closer to the vehicle's market launch.
The iX3 comes equipped with a dual-motor configuration, providing a robust 463 combined horsepower in the 50 xDrive model. Our initial experience highlighted the vehicle's energetic acceleration and the precise body control expected from a BMW. However, the ride quality was noted to be firm, particularly with the optional 22-inch wheels. The M60 variant elevates performance with a more potent rear motor, boosting total output to 603 horsepower. The power distribution favors the rear wheels, and in Sport mode, it allows for dynamic cornering, adding a playful, sport-sedan-like feel to the SUV. Braking performance is exceptional, and a one-pedal driving feature maximizes energy recuperation.
In independent testing, the iX3 50 xDrive achieved a 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 4.3 seconds. The more powerful M60 model is projected to reach 60 mph even quicker, with an estimated time of 3.9 seconds. While impressive, it's worth noting that competitors like the Porsche Macan EV 4S offer slightly faster acceleration, recording a 3.6-second 60 mph time due to its marginally higher horsepower.
Despite being an electric vehicle, the iX3 demonstrates practical utility with a maximum towing capacity of 4400 pounds when equipped with an optional trailer hitch. It's important to consider that towing will inevitably reduce the vehicle's overall driving range, a common characteristic among all electric vehicles.
Underneath the iX3's chassis lies a substantial 112-kWh battery, contributing to an impressive EPA-estimated driving range of up to 434 miles for models with smaller wheels. Larger wheel options will slightly reduce this figure. In real-world highway testing at 75 mph, an iX3 50 xDrive with 22-inch wheels delivered a respectable 330 miles of range. For recharging, the battery supports speeds up to 400 kilowatts, enabling a rapid addition of approximately 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes at compatible DC fast-charging stations. Our tests showed a 10% to 90% charge completed in 31 minutes. An 11-kW onboard charger is standard, with an optional 22-kW unit available for faster AC charging.
The EPA rates the iX3 50 xDrive's fuel economy equivalent (MPGe) at up to 125 MPGe in the city, 110 MPGe on the highway, and a combined 118 MPGe. MPGe is a standard EPA measure for assessing the energy efficiency of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. Information regarding the M60 model's MPGe will be provided upon its release and after our independent testing.
The iX3's cabin exudes a modern, high-end feel, featuring sustainable materials and an open, airy environment that comfortably accommodates four adults. Standard appointments include faux leather upholstery, with genuine leather available as an upgrade, complemented by ambient lighting. The steering wheel features an unconventional "squircle" design, though a more traditional M Sport option is offered. Climate controls are integrated into the central touchscreen, which might require some adjustment for users accustomed to physical buttons. Rear passengers will find ample space and comfort, along with dedicated air vents and USB charging ports. The cargo area is spacious, and a small front trunk (frunk) provides additional storage for smaller items, while various cubbies throughout the cabin offer convenient stowage for personal belongings.
A prominent 17.9-inch central touchscreen serves as the hub for the SUV's software systems, offering intuitive access to various functions. This is augmented by a slender, 43.0-inch display strip along the windshield, designed for quick and easy information glances. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, integrated navigation, and a seven-speaker audio system. An optional 13-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system and a head-up display further enhance the in-cabin experience.
The iX3 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features as standard, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. For enhanced convenience, an advanced adaptive cruise control system with a hands-free driving mode is available as an optional upgrade. Comprehensive crash-test results from reputable organizations like the NHTSA and IIHS will provide further insights into the vehicle's safety performance.
BMW provides the iX3 with a robust warranty package, mirroring its other electric models. This includes a four-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty, with extended coverage for electric vehicle components over eight years or 100,000 miles. Additionally, all new BMWs benefit from a three-year complimentary maintenance plan, ensuring peace of mind for owners.
The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive, as tested, demonstrates impressive specifications including a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a 112 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, and rapid charging capabilities. Performance highlights include a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 12.7 seconds at 113 mph, and excellent braking performance. Interior sound levels are also optimized for a quiet and refined ride. These results underscore the iX3's position as a powerful and efficient electric SUV.
