As the gaming world eagerly anticipates the colossal release of Grand Theft Auto 6, an unexpected contender has emerged, capturing the attention of players nostalgic for the PlayStation 2 era of open-world adventures. This new title, named Alaturka, is a passion project developed on a shoestring budget by a solo creator known as Bufuak. Its trailer recently went viral on social media, showcasing a vibrant, chaotic, and uniquely Turkish take on the classic sandbox formula, promising a fresh yet familiar experience for enthusiasts.
Bufuak, the sole developer behind Alaturka, describes it as a "PS2-era 70s Istanbul GTA with heavy driving physics and döner kebab deliveries." Players step into the shoes of a kebab apprentice who moves to Bosforus, Turkey, to work for their uncle. What begins as a simple day job soon spirals into a world of danger and excitement as the protagonist encounters local characters who offer more lucrative, albeit risky, assignments involving intense shootouts and daring escapes. The game's trailer clearly evokes the spirit of beloved GTA titles like Vice City and San Andreas, promising a blend of crime, car chases, and cultural immersion.
The game's Steam page highlights its realistic car physics, designed to convey the substantial feel of period-appropriate vehicles. Alaturka also incorporates a delivery system reminiscent of Crazy Taxi, where players must transport kebabs while skillfully navigating the bustling streets and avoiding collisions. In terms of combat, the game modernizes the classic GTA gunplay with free aiming, moving away from the lock-on mechanics that defined earlier titles like GTA 3.
Bufuak has dedicated his free time over the past two years to developing Alaturka, livestreaming the entire process on his YouTube channel. This transparent development approach has cultivated a strong community, with player feedback from weekly streams actively shaping the game's evolving city. Bufuak, who also serves as the Unreal Istanbul community lead, has fostered a unique, community-driven development model. Although a specific release date for Alaturka has not yet been announced, its ongoing development offers a rare opportunity for players to witness a game come to life in real-time and even contribute to its creation.
This indie title represents a compelling alternative for gamers who appreciate the foundational elements of classic open-world games while seeking a fresh narrative and cultural setting. Its 'zero-budget' origin story and community-centric development underscore a growing trend in the industry where passion projects can carve out a niche even amidst major releases. Alaturka's blend of nostalgic gameplay with a distinct Turkish flavor provides a refreshing experience that stands out in the crowded gaming landscape, promising both familiar thrills and unique discoveries.
