Cineplex Boards Sanfic Title 'La Residencia' from 'Algo Azul' Director Mariel García Spooner

Santiago, Chile – November 8, 2026 – Cineplex, a leading Latin American film distributor, has officially secured the North and South American sales rights for 'La Residencia,' the latest cinematic endeavor from critically acclaimed Panamanian director Mariel García Spooner. This exciting announcement was made during the Santiago Film Festival (Sanfic), where 'La Residencia' was prominently featured in the Sanfic Industria's WIP Iberoamericana section, a platform dedicated to showcasing films in post-production from across Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.

Directed by García Spooner, this compelling dramedy delves into the lives of three women in their mid-sixties who, facing financial challenges, unite to forge a new future by creating a vibrant social club for senior citizens. The film explores themes of companionship, the challenges of aging, and the profound possibility of starting anew without sacrificing one's identity. Cineplex's managing partner, Diana Dudek, expressed immense enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the company's long-standing relationship with García Spooner, which began with her successful debut film, 'Algo Azul.'

Dudek remarked, "We have always admired Mariel's unique ability to craft entertaining and relatable stories that carry a profound message. From the moment we encountered the screenplay for 'La Residencia,' we felt an immediate connection to the narrative of these three friends who, in a mature phase of life, bravely choose to reinvent themselves and journey forward together."

'La Residencia' has a notable development history, including its participation in Málaga WIP and securing the Latino Film Institute Work in Progress finishing fund at Laliff 2026, presented in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. Further enhancing its production quality, Barcelona-based Only Postproduction joined the team to provide color grading support, a collaboration fostered at Mafiz.

The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring Colombian talents Xilena Aycardi and Marcela Carvajal, alongside Panamanian actors Diana Abouganem, Massiel Mas, Diego de Obaldía, Miguel Melfi, Beatriz García, and Gregory Manrique.

García Spooner shared her vision for the film: "With 'La Residencia,' I aimed to tell the story of Cecilia, Rocío, and Martina with an intimate and humane perspective. They are three friends who begin to question their future aspirations and how to maintain their independence amidst a world of constant change. The film is a celebration of friendship, an exploration of the fear of growing older, and, most importantly, a testament to the possibility of new beginnings."

Produced by García Spooner's Panama-based company, Hello October, 'La Residencia' follows in the footsteps of 'Algo Azul,' which enjoyed a theatrical release in 11 territories and was distributed on HBO Max and Amazon's Prime Video. Hello October also produced 'Tumbadores,' available on Prime Video.

Now picture-locked and nearing completion, 'La Residencia' is poised for its much-anticipated festival debut. Dudek conveyed confidence in the film's international appeal, stating, "We are thrilled to collaborate with Mariel once more and are convinced that 'La Residencia' will resonate deeply with global audiences. We look forward to connecting with the ideal partners to bring this powerful story to viewers across diverse international markets."

In addition to 'La Residencia,' Cineplex has also acquired the Colombian and Latin American rights to another Sanfic WIP title, 'The Cry of Serankwa,' by Yull Nuñez. The distributor's recent acquisitions further include the documentary 'Yuma' and Klych López's 'Irreparable,' which is set to premiere globally at the Tallinn Black Nights film festival and will have its Latin American premiere at Argentina's Mar del Plata festival. Starring Marcela Valencia and Marcela Mar, 'Irreparable' explores the complex dynamics of two estranged sisters whose reunion unearths long-held resentments.

The acquisition of 'La Residencia' by Cineplex is a testament to the compelling storytelling emerging from Latin America and Mariel García Spooner's continued growth as a filmmaker. It highlights the power of narratives that reflect universal human experiences, such as the journey of self-discovery and the enduring strength of friendship, particularly in later life. This partnership promises to bring a deeply moving and relatable film to a broad audience, fostering a greater appreciation for diverse cinematic voices and perspectives. As audiences increasingly seek stories that offer both entertainment and profound meaning, 'La Residencia' appears poised to resonate widely, offering a poignant reflection on reinvention and the beauty of human connection.
