Dan Houser, a prominent figure known for his instrumental role as a co-founder of Rockstar Games and his creative leadership in the initial Grand Theft Auto series, established Absurd Ventures in 2023. His new venture aims to develop fresh creative endeavors, including video games. Houser has provided a glimpse into Absurd Ventures' first two anticipated titles, confirming that one will be a humorous open-world experience.
Despite his extensive background in crafting successful comedic open-world games, Houser surprisingly disclosed that he no longer engages with this genre as a player. He has even intentionally sidestepped viewing the gameplay reveal for Grand Theft Auto 6. His rationale stems from a desire for Absurd Ventures' inaugural projects to explore novel concepts and push boundaries, striving for experiences that are truly unprecedented.
In an interview, Houser offered more details on the two upcoming games. The first is characterized as an 'open-world comedy that heavily emphasizes humor and memorable characters,' while the second delves into 'a dystopian science fiction narrative centered on a video game development gone awry and a rogue AI that attains sentience.' Absurd Ventures had previously announced a collaboration with Smilegate on a AAA sci-fi game within its 'A Better Paradise' universe, with the comedic title slated for the 'Absurdaverse.' Houser explained that he refrains from playing contemporary open-world games to preserve his creative vision, viewing them from a deconstructive lens that could influence his own design process. He explicitly avoided the Grand Theft Auto 6 reveal to prevent any creative distractions.
While neither of Absurd Ventures' games has been formally unveiled or given a release timeframe, Houser hinted that more information regarding the Absurdaverse open-world game would be shared within the coming months. This strategic approach underscores Houser's commitment to innovation and originality, aiming to carve out a distinct niche in the gaming landscape with his new studio's offerings.
