Launched on May 27, 1986, by Enix (now Square Enix), the game known as Dragon Quest in Japan quickly captivated audiences, evolving into one of the most beloved and influential role-playing game series in history. Four decades on, its legacy is cemented not just by its critical acclaim but by its latest sales achievement.
In a testament to its widespread and sustained popularity, the Dragon Quest series has officially surpassed an incredible milestone: 100 million units sold across its entire lifetime. This announcement, made on September 16, further solidifies its status as a global gaming phenomenon.
To commemorate this landmark achievement and the series' 40th anniversary, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii shared a message of profound appreciation with fans. He conveyed his deep gratitude for their unwavering support and reaffirmed the team's commitment to delivering captivating new adventures. His message was touchingly underscored by a celebratory cake adorned with the series' iconic monster designs.
The Dragon Quest universe extends far beyond its 11 core titles, encompassing a rich tapestry of spin-off games across diverse genres. Its narrative depth and engaging characters have also inspired numerous novels, manga, and anime adaptations, enriching the fan experience. The franchise continues to expand, with Square Enix set to release 'Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World' later this year.
During the recent 40th-anniversary livestream, Square Enix offered new insights into 'Dragon Quest 12.' Initially revealed in 2021 as 'The Flames of Fate,' executive producer Yosuke Saito disclosed that the project encountered significant development challenges, necessitating a comprehensive reboot. The game has now been officially rebranded as 'Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams,' suggesting a renewed focus that aims to resonate more authentically with the series' traditional fan expectations. While the original teaser hinted at a darker narrative, 'Beyond Dreams' appears to guide the twelfth installment back towards the familiar charm and adventurous spirit for which Dragon Quest is renowned. Further details regarding its release date or launch window are eagerly awaited.
