In contemporary fashion, the era of models serving merely as 'blank canvases' is fading. A new wave of faces is confidently showcasing their inherent style and personal flair through their wardrobe choices, whether it's a casual ensemble of jeans and a t-shirt or a striking statement garment. Each month, Vogue magazine aims to highlight the fashion-forward selections of a current prominent model, providing readers with ideal inspirations for their seasonal mood boards. After all, what could be more chic than the effortlessly cool 'model-off-duty' aesthetic?
My name is Francesco Ruggiero, and I am 26 years old. I reside in Athens, Greece, and my career is managed by D Model Agency. My journey into modeling began quite unexpectedly.
My entry into the modeling world occurred in the summer of 2019, shortly after completing my education. My sister, seeking a new recreational activity, visited a modeling agency and was advised to bring me along. Both of us were subsequently signed. While my sister ultimately decided modeling wasn't for her, I continued to pursue it, eventually establishing a successful career.
I generally prefer to avoid model apartments, as I'm not particularly keen on cohabiting with strangers. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Milan, I had no alternative. I ended up sharing an inexpensive apartment with two friends. We had limited food and finances, and at one point, all three of us were sleeping in a single double bed. Despite the circumstances, it was an incredibly memorable and enjoyable experience, though one I wouldn't readily repeat.
Although the exact details of my first runway appearance are somewhat hazy, I am quite certain it was for a Giorgio Armani show. I distinctly remember wearing an impeccably tailored and stylish silk tuxedo, a signature creation for which Armani is celebrated.
Undoubtedly, my most cherished professional engagement was the photoshoot with Steven Meisel for Dolce & Gabbana. Collaborating with Steven is a rare opportunity, especially for male models. To have achieved this after so many years of his esteemed legacy was truly unexpected. I had almost given up hope, as such opportunities tend to become scarcer over time.
Achieving the cover of Vogue Greece this past June was a monumental moment; it marked the first time a male model graced the cover. The experience felt surreal. Previously, only renowned actors had been featured, which makes me feel confident in saying, yes, I've truly 'made it.'
I don't adhere to a singular style; I often find menswear to be somewhat restrictive compared to womenswear. It demands greater investment of time, exposure, and effort to unearth pieces that genuinely reflect one's individuality as a male model.
I prefer a style that merges classic elements with a distinct, often whimsical, twist. For instance, my favorite pair of pants, the Eckhaus Latta Bent Pant, featured a unique zipper extending from front to back, allowing for an intriguing "party trick." I also enjoy incorporating unexpected accessories, such as a keychain worn as a necklace or a tie adorned with a cat motif.
My aesthetic is drawn to vibrant hues and innovative new brands. Currently, Mfpen stands out as a favorite, and I'm perpetually seeking fresh designers. I also have a fondness for women's handbags; a substantial Bottega bag is likely my next acquisition. In essence, I enjoy experimentation and remain open to diverse styles, often feeling like a fashion chameleon.
My top three wardrobe essentials include, firstly, an Our Legacy keychain, which I creatively wear as a necklace despite its original purpose. Secondly, an ERL belt featuring a sun-shaped buckle, reminiscent of the sun from One Piece, a reference some might appreciate. Lastly, a pair of classic leather loafers completes my foundational items.
For casting sessions, I opt for a straightforward outfit: a plain white t-shirt or tank top paired with jeans, either full-length or shorts. I consciously avoid chasing specific trends, as I believe the industry can create unnecessary pressure to conform. I simply present myself authentically, as genuine expression is often highly valued. My advice is to not overthink it.
My key to surviving Fashion Week involves the support of friends (preferably non-models), engaging in gaming for relaxation, and indulging in ample good food. Crucially, I try not to overanalyze situations.
If my career path hadn't led me to modeling, I would undoubtedly be directing films. In fact, that remains my ultimate aspiration—to become a director.
My ultimate career aspiration, and a prominent item on my bucket list, is to walk for Demna's Gucci. It is a dream I hold strongly.
