For a quarter of a century, from 1986 to 2011, Brian Jacques captivated audiences globally with his imaginative Redwall fantasy novels. Even after his passing, his final work, "The Rogue Crew," released in 2011, stood as the concluding piece of the series for fifteen years. However, the saga is now set to continue, much to the delight of its dedicated readership.
A new, 23rd book in the acclaimed series has been officially announced. Titled "Orphans of Mossflower," this highly anticipated novel is scheduled for release on September 7, 2027. This launch will be accompanied by a brand-new boxed set that includes all 22 preceding novels. Both releases will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the series, which first debuted in the U.K. in 1986 and in the U.S. a year later. Intriguingly, initial promotional materials suggest that "Orphans of Mossflower" is penned by Jacques himself.
Whispers and theories about a 23rd book have circulated among fans for more than ten years. Back in 2010, publisher Penguin organized a competition, offering a lucky winner the chance to name a character in the then-upcoming Redwall novel. In 2015, the winner came forward with details about their character, a character conspicuously absent from "The Rogue Crew," further solidifying the belief that another book was indeed in existence.
As of now, an official plot summary for the forthcoming novel remains under wraps. In the period leading up to his passing, Jacques’ later works typically followed a chronological order, a departure from earlier books that often explored various points within the Redwall universe timeline. Considering this, it is reasonable to infer that "Orphans of Mossflower" could serve as a direct continuation of "The Rogue Crew." The Mossflower Woods are a familiar and central setting in the series, with Redwall Abbey being its most iconic landmark. The title itself hints at a scenario where the Abbey's inhabitants might face a forced relocation or displacement.
Further supporting this premise are details shared by the contest winner on the Redwall wiki. Their character, Reisa Kartwell, a cartographer, possessed invaluable maps depicting efficient travel routes, crucial for when the Redwallers would need to swiftly reach Salamandastron during an attack on Redwall. More information is expected to emerge as the release date approaches. It's worth noting that a Netflix adaptation of the series, once under development by "Over the Garden Wall" creator Patrick McHale, was unfortunately canceled earlier this yea
