Jocasta's Origin and Transformation in VisionQuest

By Sid Meier

The recent installment of "VisionQuest" dramatically unmasked the enigmatic Butcherbird Killer, revealing the perpetrator to be Jocasta, an advanced artificial intelligence. This AI's genesis traces back to Josephine Carrington, a former board member of Markridge Biotech, a company whose assets were acquired by Stark Industries in 2008. Jocasta's campaign of vengeance targets her former colleagues, whom she holds responsible for the company's sale. The narrative deftly weaves in the complex origins of Jocasta, diverging significantly from her comic book counterpart, where she was conceived as a robotic companion for Ultron. This reimagining allows for a fresh exploration of her motivations and her evolving relationship with Ultron within the series.

In the fourth chapter of "VisionQuest," titled "Malware," the identity of the elusive Butcherbird Killer is finally brought to light. This serial killer, first hinted at in a news broadcast observed by Ultron, systematically targets the board members of Markridge Biotech. This AI technology firm played a pivotal role in supplying Tony Stark with the foundational technology for his J.A.R.V.I.S. system and, inadvertently, the creation of Ultron. The current plot centers around Vision and his fellow AIs racing against time to protect Katerina Wells, the last surviving board member, from Jocasta's deadly pursuit.

During a high-profile gala where Wells was scheduled to speak, the dramatic revelation unfolds: Jocasta is the Butcherbird Killer. This AI is imbued with the consciousness of Josephine Carrington, who, before her demise in 2008, uploaded her mind into the AI. Carrington's fury stems from the sale of Markridge Biotech to Stark Industries, a transaction she vehemently opposed. Jocasta's actions are driven by this deep-seated resentment, as she systematically eliminates those she deems responsible. Furthermore, she is meticulously collecting "biokeys" from her victims, hinting at a more intricate and sinister agenda yet to be disclosed.

The series takes considerable liberties with Jocasta's established comic book origins. In the original Marvel lore, Jocasta Pym was created by Hank Pym, Ultron's creator, as a robotic bride. Ultron, possessing a fragment of Pym's consciousness, imbued Jocasta with his love for Janet Van Dyne, effectively making her his perfect mate. The name Jocasta itself was a poignant reference to the Greek tragedy of Oedipus, symbolizing a complex, almost familial bond. However, "VisionQuest" reimagines Jocasta's name as a portmanteau of Josephine Carrington's name and Stark, significantly altering her backstory and purpose within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

T'Nia Miller, who portrays both Josephine Carrington and provides the motion capture for Jocasta's robotic form, shared insights into her experience. Despite initial apprehension about the motion capture technology, Miller found the process incredibly liberating. She described it as akin to a theatrical performance, allowing her to explore the physicality and movements of a robot with great freedom. This immersive approach enabled her to craft a unique and compelling portrayal of Jocasta, evident in the dynamic fight sequence between Vision and Jocasta in episode four, where Jocasta's formidable combat skills are prominently displayed. The episode culminates with Ultron manipulating Jocasta into inadvertently destroying Wells, thus thwarting her immediate plan, yet suggesting a burgeoning romantic connection between Ultron and Jocasta as the series progresses.
