John Leguizamo Cast as Lead Villain in Joseph Kosinski's 'Miami Vice '85' Adaptation

John Leguizamo, fresh off his acclaimed performance in Universal's summer hit 'The Odyssey,' is rejoining the studio for the big-screen adaptation of 'Miami Vice.' This new crime thriller, titled 'Miami Vice '85,' will see Leguizamo portraying the central villain, adding a formidable presence to an already star-studded cast.

The film boasts an impressive lineup, featuring Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, and Danny Ramirez. Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on action-packed films like 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'F1,' is at the helm, directing this contemporary take on the classic 1980s television series. Production is slated to commence in November, with filming locations in the vibrant cities of New York and Miami.

'Miami Vice '85' aims to re-explore the distinctive blend of allure and corruption that characterized mid-1980s Miami. Drawing inspiration from the pilot episode of the groundbreaking TV show, the movie promises to deliver a fresh perspective while honoring the original's significant cultural impact on fashion and filmmaking. The original 'Miami Vice' series, created by Anthony Yerkovich, famously starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover police officers, recognized for their signature fast boats and pastel suits.

In this new cinematic endeavor, Michael B. Jordan will embody the role of Ricardo Tubbs, while Austin Butler steps into the shoes of James Crockett, the two iconic and stylish detectives. Industry insiders indicate that Leguizamo's character will serve as the narrative's chief antagonist, setting the stage for intense confrontations.

'Vice '85' is being filmed for IMAX release and is scheduled to be distributed by Universal Pictures on May 19, 2028. The production is a collaborative effort between Dylan Clark, through his company Dylan Clark Productions, and Joseph Kosinski. Leguizamo's recent projects highlight his strong association with Universal. Beyond 'The Odyssey,' where he played Eumaeus alongside Matt Damon in the studio's highest-grossing film to date with $1.68 billion globally, he has also secured a role in an untitled project from the acclaimed filmmaking duo Daniels, which reunites him with Damon and is currently in production in Los Angeles. Additionally, Leguizamo will appear in Universal’s 'The Exorcist: Martyrs,' a horror reboot directed by Mike Flanagan, set to open on March 12, 2027.
