Pixar Animation Studios is set to undergo a significant leadership change, with Jonathan Garson stepping into the role of President. This transition sees Jim Morris, who has served as President for 12 years, moving to a President Emeritus position. Garson will now be responsible for all production and operational aspects of Pixar, working in close partnership with Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter.
Jonathan Garson's appointment as President signifies a new era for Pixar, where he will oversee the entire spectrum of the studio's production and operations. This includes managing producers, department heads, and post-production for upcoming animated features such as 'Gatto' and 'Ghost Market,' following the immense success of 'Toy Story 5.' Garson, who has been with Disney for over three decades and Pixar since 2010, brings extensive experience from his previous role as Pixar's general manager, where he also led marketing and franchise efforts.
Jim Morris, after a distinguished 21-year tenure at Pixar, including 12 years as President, will transition to a President Emeritus role. In this capacity, Morris will continue his involvement as the executive producer for 'Incredibles 3,' scheduled for release in June 2028. Beyond this, his focus will shift towards nurturing talent and mentorship across Pixar and Walt Disney Studios, as well as driving technological advancements to empower the studios' creative teams. Morris's leadership saw Pixar generate over $12 billion at the global box office during his presidency, maintaining a legacy of critical and cultural impact.
These leadership adjustments were officially announced by Alan Bergman, Chairman of Disney Entertainment and Studios at The Walt Disney Company, and are slated to take effect on January 4, 2027. Bergman expressed profound respect for Morris's leadership and dedication, highlighting his role in ensuring a seamless succession. He also commended Garson's exceptional leadership qualities and deep understanding of Pixar's unique storytelling ethos.
Further reinforcing the creative leadership, Jonas Rivera will assume an expanded role as creative executive VP, guiding filmmakers and development initiatives in close collaboration with Docter and Garson. Rivera's long-standing history with Pixar, dating back to 1994, includes Oscar wins for 'Inside Out' and 'Toy Story 4,' a Best Picture nomination for 'Up,' and executive producing 'Inside Out 2,' one of the most successful animated films in history. His extensive creative expertise is expected to greatly benefit the team in their future endeavors.
This strategic leadership evolution at Pixar aims to build upon the studio's rich legacy of innovation and storytelling excellence. Jonathan Garson, in his new role, is committed to upholding Pixar's culture of quality and creative ambition, working alongside Pete Docter, Jonas Rivera, and the production leadership team. Jim Morris will continue to contribute his invaluable experience through special projects, ensuring a smooth transition and continued success for the beloved animation studio.
