At the recent ring ceremony for the New York Knicks, star guard Josh Hart made a striking entrance with an unparalleled hairstyle. His braids were meticulously crafted to mirror the iconic Larry O'Brien trophy, a bold statement celebrating the team's 2026 NBA Championship triumph. While this intricate design didn't secure a win in their opening game against the revamped Philadelphia 76ers, led by LeBron James, it undeniably marked a significant moment in men's hair artistry.
For several years, Hart has entrusted his hair to Sandra Finn, a Houston-based hairstylist known for her elaborate braided designs. Their partnership began when Hart, impressed by her work, reached out via Instagram. Finn has previously transformed his hair into various symbols, including the Yankees logo and an "I ❤ NY" motif. Their initial collaboration featured the Villanova "V," a nod to Hart's alma mater. Annually, Hart commissions Finn for special occasions, such as Game 5 of the Knicks' championship run.
Following the Knicks' 2025-26 season victory, Finn envisioned creating a trophy design in Hart's braids. This idea serendipitously aligned with Hart's request for the very same design ahead of the ring ceremony. Finn recounted her process, explaining that she relies on her understanding of hair mechanics, using her iPhone and markers to conceptualize how the braids would form the trophy. Sometimes, she sketches her ideas on paper to refine the design.
The creation of the trophy braids was a two-and-a-half-hour endeavor, complemented by a fade haircut by Louis Rexach Jr., also known as @earsthebarber. Although not the most complex style Finn has undertaken, it required more time than simpler designs like the Yankees logo, which took about 90 minutes. The most challenging aspect was accurately depicting the basketball, requiring precision to create a perfect circle and the distinct lines without making the style appear too bulky. Finn successfully translated her vision into a faithful representation of the championship award.
Finn observed a stark contrast between Hart and her other athlete clients, who often prefer straightforward styles and maintain a serious demeanor. Hart, on the other hand, is characterized as "carefree, funny, and doesn't take life too seriously." She believes his artistic and expressive nature is clearly reflected in the unique and bold hairstyles he chooses, making each creation a personal statemen
