Ray Panthaki's debut feature film, "In Starland," starring Clarence Maclin, has secured backing from prominent figures in independent cinema. The movie is set to make its global debut at the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it will be the closing entry in the first feature competition. This marks a significant milestone for the production, which has navigated an unconventional path to completion, emphasizing its truly independent spirit and the dedication of its creators.

Christine Vachon and Mason Plotts of Killer Films have officially joined the production team, lending their considerable expertise to "In Starland." This collaboration underscores the film's artistic merit and its potential to resonate with audiences. The announcement of its selection as the closing film for Tallinn's first feature competition further solidifies its position as a noteworthy new work in the cinematic landscape.

Co-written by Panthaki and Jason Kavan, "In Starland" explores the journey of Ernie, a 50-year-old man whose isolated existence is dramatically altered when a group of youthful influencers descends upon his quiet town. Maclin portrays Ernie, whose encounters with this vibrant, digitally-connected generation force him to re-evaluate his sense of self and his place in the world. The narrative promises a poignant examination of contemporary themes, including the impact of social media and the search for connection in an increasingly fragmented society.

The film boasts a diverse cast, including Miss Benny, Bella Maclean, Colin Buckingham, Leesie Pinto, Tai’mua, Kang Frvr, Mollee Gray, Gallant, Maxwell Cunningham, Marcus Scribner, and Ben Dickey. This ensemble brings a variety of talents to the screen, enriching the film's portrayal of its characters and their interactions. "In Starland" was independently produced by Panthaki and Daniel Khalili for Le Bateau Lavoir, alongside Daisy Allsop for Archface Films and Victor Paul Wajnberg. Vachon and Plotts served as executive producers, providing crucial support for the project.

Filmed over just 20 days in Mississippi, the production consciously operated outside established studio frameworks. This approach allowed the filmmakers to maintain creative control and foster a collaborative environment driven by shared belief in the project. Earlier in the year, "In Starland" was recognized as one of the BFI and British Council's GREAT 8 selections at Cannes, a program designed to introduce promising new British films to international buyers and festival programmers, highlighting its early recognition within the industry.

Panthaki articulated the profound independence that defined the film's creation, stating that the team consciously moved beyond traditional independent film structures, relying solely on the conviction of those involved. He emphasized that this collective faith in the vision, from Maclin's performance to his own direction and Daniel's collaboration, propelled the project forward. The director expressed immense pride and honor at the opportunity to premiere and close the first feature competition at a prestigious festival like Tallinn, viewing it as a testament to the collective effort and belief invested in "In Starland."

The upcoming world premiere of "In Starland" at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is a culmination of a truly independent filmmaking endeavor. The narrative, a poignant exploration of an individual's confrontation with modern influences, coupled with a dedicated creative team, positions the film as a significant entry for emerging talent in global cinema. Its journey from an unconventional production to a major festival debut exemplifies the power of artistic conviction and collaborative spirit in achieving cinematic recognition.
