Marvel Comics is set to discontinue its Marvel Unlimited service, a staple for digital comic readers for two decades, by the end of December. The company announced its plans to replace it with a new Marvel Comics application, developed in collaboration with Webtoon, a prominent digital comics provider. This transition, which includes the ability for existing Marvel Unlimited subscribers to migrate their comic libraries and reading histories, has sparked both anticipation and questions among the fan base, with many hoping for an improved user experience from the new platform.
The current Marvel Unlimited app will cease adding new content on December 7th, with a complete removal scheduled for December 28th. Ahead of this, the new Marvel Comics app, co-launched by Marvel and Webtoon on November 16th, aims to provide an upgraded reading experience. This revamped application promises access to over 35,000 issues from Marvel's rich history, boasting a complete overhaul to enhance user satisfaction—a welcome change for many who found room for improvement in the previous app.
Subscribers of Marvel Unlimited will be able to seamlessly transfer their existing comic collections to the new Marvel Comics app following its debut. Importantly, Marvel has assured users that their payment information from Marvel Unlimited will not be shared with Webtoon. Therefore, current subscribers will need to establish a new subscription with Webtoon for the Marvel Comics app. Those with active Marvel Unlimited subscriptions will be eligible for an automated, prorated refund for the unused portion of their subscription, expected around November 16th.
Webtoon, the company powering the new Marvel Comics app, is a South Korea-based digital comics platform that expanded globally in 2014. Initially known for independent digital comics, Webtoon has significantly grown through partnerships with major publishers like Archie Comics, Dark Horse, DC, and Ubisoft. In September 2025, the Walt Disney Corporation acquired a 2% stake in Webtoon, signaling intentions to integrate content from Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios onto the platform. The introduction of the Webtoon-managed Marvel Comics app marks a pivotal step in this broader strategy, with plans to introduce additional Disney-owned content in the coming months.
The new Marvel Comics app will offer two subscription tiers: a base plan at $9.99 per month or $69.99 per year, which provides access to new issues three months after their print release. An 'Ultimate' tier, priced at $12.49 per month or $99.99 per year, accelerates this access to just one month after print. For early adopters, a 'Founder Member' offer is available, allowing for a discounted annual Ultimate plan at $59.99 for the first year. This special offer can be secured through pre-registration on marvel.webtoon.com and will also be available at New York Comic Con 2026.
In essence, Marvel's decision to transition from Marvel Unlimited to a new Webtoon-powered app signifies a strategic move towards enhancing the digital comic reading experience for fans. This shift, set to complete by December, will provide subscribers with a modernized platform, a vast library of comics, and the convenience of importing their existing collections, all while ensuring payment data privacy and offering prorated refunds for current subscriptions. The collaboration with Webtoon also paves the way for future integration of a wider array of Disney-owned intellectual properties, promising an expanded universe of digital content for comic enthusiasts.
