The creators behind the hit Soulslike game 'Lies of P' are gearing up to explore a new classic tale in their next installment. After achieving remarkable success with over four million copies sold since its 2023 debut, a concluding scene in the original game provided clues about the franchise's future direction. A recent trademark application has now all but confirmed which beloved story will serve as the foundation for the sequel.
The post-credits sequence in 'Lies of P' reveals a significant twist: the character known as Giangio is, in fact, Philippus Paracelsus, a figure central to the events unfolding in Krat. He mentions his quest to find someone named Dorothy, and the subsequent scene depicts a mysterious individual in ruby slippers traversing the rooftops of Krat, culminating in a distinctive heel-click. These clear allusions to 'The Wizard of Oz' strongly indicate the developers' intentions to pursue an Oz-inspired narrative. Neowiz, the publisher, recently filed a trademark for 'Wonders of O,' further solidifying speculation about an Oz-themed sequel to 'Lies of P.' Similar to how 'Lies of P' drew inspiration from 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' without explicitly naming its protagonist, the upcoming sequel may adapt L. Frank Baum's Oz books without directly using the name 'Oz' for its setting. Given Dorothy's arrival in Krat in the post-credits scene, it's possible that the sequel will bring Oz characters into the world of Krat rather than transporting players to Oz itself. While a sequel has been confirmed, specific details and a release timeline remain undisclosed, with the development team having first released the 'Overture' prequel expansion and difficulty options for the original game.
The journey of 'Lies of P' from a successful game to an expanding universe demonstrates how creative adaptations of classic stories can resonate with modern audiences. By intertwining the dark, challenging gameplay of a Soulslike with the fantastical elements of beloved tales, the developers are not only pushing the boundaries of the genre but also inviting players to re-examine familiar narratives through a fresh, often more somber, lens. This approach highlights the enduring power of storytelling and its capacity for reinvention, offering a profound experience that celebrates both literary heritage and innovative game design.
