Nintendo has officially announced that its in-house Zelda development unit, Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) Production Group No. 3, is at the helm of the much-anticipated remake of 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.' This confirmation puts an end to widespread speculation within the gaming community regarding the development studio responsible for the project. Previously, fans had theorized that other studios, such as Grezzo or Monolith Soft, might be involved, given their past contributions to the Zelda series or other Nintendo titles. The game's release is scheduled for November 5, promising a fresh take on a beloved classic.
In a recent 'Ask the Developer' article, Nintendo put an end to months of speculation by officially naming Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) Production Group No. 3 as the lead studio for the upcoming remake of 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.' This revelation confirms that the team primarily responsible for the iconic Zelda franchise will be helming the revival of one of its most cherished entries. Among the six developers featured in the interview, four are members of Production Group No. 3, alongside Eiji Aonuma, a long-time Zelda producer and former group manager, and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who has directed several notable Zelda titles.
Prior to this announcement, the gaming community buzzed with theories about potential developers. Many fans speculated that Grezzo, the studio behind the 3DS remakes of 'Ocarina of Time' and 'Majora’s Mask,' and the upcoming 'The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,' might take on the project. Another popular contender was Monolith Soft, known for the 'Xenoblade' series and its support role in major Zelda titles like 'Breath of the Wild' and 'Tears of the Kingdom.' Monolith Soft is currently developing 'Xenoblade Genesis,' slated for a 2027 release on the Nintendo Switch 2. The decision to have the main Zelda team work on a remake has stirred some discussion among fans, with some expressing a desire for the team to focus entirely on new installments. However, it's possible that the studio is simultaneously developing both new projects and the remake, potentially with assistance from support studios. If Grezzo and Monolith Soft are not involved in this particular remake, it could free them up to pursue other exciting projects, such as a potential follow-up to 'Echoes of Wisdom' or the aforementioned 'Xenoblade' title. The full list of contributing studios for 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' remake will be disclosed upon its release on November 5.
This announcement from Nintendo highlights the company's commitment to maintaining creative control over its flagship franchises while also demonstrating the depth of talent within its internal development teams. The decision to entrust the 'Ocarina of Time' remake to EPD Production Group No. 3 underscores the studio's expertise and long-standing connection to the series. For fans, this news offers a blend of reassurance and anticipation, knowing that the remake is in the hands of those most familiar with the world of Hyrule. It also sparks conversations about resource allocation within Nintendo and the potential impact on future game development, offering a fascinating glimpse into the intricate workings of one of the gaming industry's most revered companies.
