Old Navy and Altuzarra recently unveiled their highly anticipated fashion collaboration with an imaginative launch event. The collection, which draws inspiration from classic literature and combines everyday American style with a touch of romanticism, was celebrated at a unique, book-themed gathering. This partnership also marks Altuzarra's first venture into children's wear, expanding his design universe.
On a recent Thursday evening, the McNally Jackson Books location in Rockefeller Center, New York City, underwent a magical transformation, becoming the exquisite venue for the exclusive launch party of the Old Navy x Altuzarra collaborative collection. The event was a vibrant fusion of fashion and literature, setting a memorable scene for the unveiling.
Before guests even stepped inside the Fifth Avenue establishment, the festive atmosphere was palpable. The storefront windows were adorned with artfully arranged stacks of books, each encased in covers printed with distinct patterns from the new collection. These were complemented by charming illustrations that echoed the same design motifs, hinting at the collection's literary inspirations.
The evening drew a distinguished crowd of celebrities and fashion insiders. Campaign luminary Alexa Chung graced the event, alongside Joseph Altuzarra, the designer behind the collection, and Zac Posen, Old Navy's Chief Creative Officer. Other notable attendees included actress Riley Keough, actor Cole Sprouse, Alisha Boe, model Daria Strokous, and entrepreneur Rachelle Hruska. Many guests, including Alexa Chung, expressed their admiration for Joseph Altuzarra's deep appreciation for literature, noting how it profoundly influenced the collection's aesthetic.
Designer Joseph Altuzarra shared insights into the collection's genesis, recalling a chance encounter with Zac Posen about a year and a half prior, shortly after Posen's appointment at Old Navy. Their conversation sparked the idea for a collaboration, which evolved naturally. Altuzarra, a renowned bibliophile who traditionally gifts books to his fashion show attendees, found the bookstore setting particularly meaningful. He revealed that the collection's very essence was woven around the joy of reading, with even the garment hang tags ingeniously designed as small bookmarks. His personal connection to the venue was evident, as he fondly referred to McNally Jackson as his favorite bookstore.
Inside the expansive 7,000-square-foot bookstore, mannequins elegantly displayed various ensembles from the collection, seamlessly blending fashion into the literary landscape. Attendees were welcomed with specially crafted signature cocktails, each named after the collection's distinct patterns, such as the "Fair Isle" and "Twin Flame" cocktails, along with a refreshing "Wildflower Spritz" mocktail. Pinch Food Design curated a selection of gourmet light bites, ranging from miniature avocado toasts to exquisitely marinated figs.
Adding to the evening's enchanting ambiance, a string quartet positioned on the upper level performed captivating renditions of popular melodies. In another inviting corner, guests engaged in a creative activity, gathering around a table to craft personalized pressed-flower bookmarks with the guidance of Framed Florals, further intertwining the themes of fashion and literature.
Altuzarra elaborated on his design process, explaining that he approached this capsule collection with the same meticulous attention he dedicates to his mainline collections. He immersed himself in the literary world, drawing inspiration from works he was rereading at the time, specifically mentioning "Wuthering Heights" and the novels of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. He found particular fascination in the dynamic interplay between Old Navy's practical, cheerful, sportswear-centric American identity and the sensual, windswept romanticism evoked by these classic literary works, noting how this contrast generated an intriguing creative tension.
Zac Posen enthusiastically endorsed the collection, describing it as "fully his vision" and "his love letter to the Old Navy customer." He also highlighted Altuzarra’s personal connection to family, observing that Altuzarra's children often appear at the end of his shows, underscoring his identity as a family man—a quality that perfectly aligns with Old Navy’s brand ethos as a family-oriented label.
Alexa Chung, who first connected with Altuzarra during an interview for her YouTube series, expressed that joining the campaign felt like a natural progression. She remarked on the collection's "quintessential Regency England vibe" and was particularly delighted by its deep roots in Altuzarra's literary passion. As a self-proclaimed book lover and a British native, she felt a profound resonance with the collection's themes.
Chung also lauded the event itself, noting how accurately it mirrored Altuzarra's creative intentions. She reflected on the challenge of creating truly innovative events in a world where many concepts have been exhausted. However, she emphasized that the launch party's profound impact stemmed from its authenticity and integrity, feeling like a genuine extension of Joseph Altuzarra's creative universe.
The Old Navy x Altuzarra collection is slated for release on September 30, and will be accessible at select retail locations and through OldNavy.com.
