In a significant shift, the American Film Market (AFM), traditionally a platform for mainstream cinematic releases, is embracing a more art-house focus by featuring Romania as its first-ever Country of Focus. This initiative aims to highlight the burgeoning talent and growing industry within Romanian cinema, fostering international collaborations and showcasing the country's contributions to global filmmaking.

Romania's Emergence on the Global Film Stage

The American Film Market (AFM) is breaking new ground by designating Romania as its inaugural Country of Focus. This move signals a strategic shift for the market, which has historically centered on commercial cinema, towards embracing and promoting international art-house productions. The decision recognizes Romania's increasing influence and significant contributions to global cinema, bringing its unique narratives and creative talent to a broader international audience. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the country's flourishing film industry, which has consistently produced acclaimed works that resonate with critics and audiences worldwide. The focus on Romania will provide an invaluable platform for its filmmakers and producers to engage with the global film community, opening new avenues for collaboration and distribution.

Scheduled for November 10-15 in Los Angeles, the AFM will host a robust delegation from Creative Romanian Filmmakers (CRFM). This group, comprising filmmakers, producers, and production companies, will present their latest projects, engage in discussions with industry executives regarding filming opportunities in Romania, and explore international co-production ventures. This is a monumental occasion for the Romanian film industry, serving as an invitation for buyers, sales agents, and producers to discover the wealth of Romanian stories, talent, and diverse locations. The presence of such a delegation underscores a concerted effort to establish lasting partnerships and elevate Romania's profile within the global film landscape. The event is poised to generate considerable interest and investment in Romanian cinema, further solidifying its position as a significant player in the international film community.

Spotlight on Talent and Production Incentives

A key figure in the Romanian delegation will be Cristian Mungiu, the Palme d’Or-winning director, who will attend with his critically acclaimed drama Fjord, starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. This film is Romania's official entry for the Oscar in the best international feature category, and is widely considered a strong contender for the Academy long-list. Mungiu's participation underscores the high caliber of talent representing Romania at the AFM. He will also champion his country as an attractive filming location, emphasizing that Romania's cash rebate system is fully operational once again. Furthermore, Mungiu highlighted ongoing discussions with Romanian authorities to implement upfront cash-flow financing for the rebate, with tangible results anticipated as early as 2027. These financial incentives are crucial for attracting international productions, making Romania a more competitive and appealing destination for filmmakers globally.

Beyond promoting production incentives, Mungiu will participate in a panel discussion titled “Beyond the New Wave: Romania as Your Next Production Partner.” This session, scheduled for Saturday, November 14, at the Fairmont Century Plaza, will feature other prominent figures from the Romanian film industry, including Valentin Savu, General Manager of the Romanian Office for Film and Investments in Culture, and leading producers. The panel aims to delve into the various opportunities for filming in Romania, discussing how international partners can collaborate with local producers to leverage the country's film incentives. Additionally, the AFM will screen four Romanian films—Comatogen, Gone Guy, Grounded, and The Circle—at the AMC Century City 15, offering a glimpse into the diverse storytelling and artistic vision emerging from Romania. Various Romanian companies will also have dedicated exhibition spaces at the Fairmont Century Plaza for meetings, further facilitating networking and collaboration within the industry.
