Matt Hullum, the visionary writer and director, is once again joining forces with Burnie Burns, who takes on the role of executive producer, for their latest cinematic endeavor. This collaboration brings together the creative minds behind the internet's beloved Rooster Teeth, a partnership that has historically captivated audiences worldwide.
'Bad Toys' draws its inspiration from the rich and often unsettling narratives of medieval Christmas elf folklore. The film explores a darker side of the holiday season, asking audiences to consider the consequences of being naughty, as a mischievous elf delivers not just wishes, but also regrets. This concept promises a fresh, intriguing take on traditional Christmas stories.
The pre-production phase for 'Bad Toys' is scheduled to commence in early 2027, aiming for a theatrical debut around Christmas of the same year. Suzanne Weinert of Flatiron Pictures is on board as the producer, ensuring the project moves forward smoothly towards its anticipated release.
Hullum revealed that the idea for 'Bad Toys' stemmed from a personal tradition where his wife would playfully hide Christmas elf dolls in unexpected places, leading to humorous jump scares. This lighthearted family custom prompted him to delve into the ancient origins of elf mythology, particularly Scandinavian tales, uncovering a history of elves that are far from benevolent. He envisions the film as a modern adventure rooted in these eerie old fairy tales, providing a platform to reconnect with his Rooster Teeth colleagues and their global fanbase.
Rooster Teeth, an online entertainment powerhouse launched in 2003, made a significant mark on early YouTube culture with hits like 'Red vs. Blue.' Despite its acquisition by Otter Media, AT&T, and Warner Bros., and a temporary closure in 2024, Burns's return in 2025 to reacquire and revitalize the brand speaks to its enduring appeal and dedicated community. This new film serves as another chapter in the company's remarkable journey.
Burns expressed his excitement about re-teaming with Hullum, stating that he eagerly embraced the opportunity to collaborate again the moment he learned of Hullum's new project. He looks forward to contributing to Hullum's creative vision for 'Bad Toys,' highlighting their strong working relationship and shared passion for innovative storytelling.
