Launched in late September, Valve's advanced VR headset, the Steam Frame, quickly captured attention. The latest data from the Steam Hardware Survey, covering October's usage, reveals a significant boost in the device's adoption, indicating its successful debut in the virtual reality market.
The Steam Frame's share of VR headset usage on Steam dramatically increased from 0.41% in September to 4.13% in October. This propelled it past several established competitors, including the Oculus Rift S, Sony PS VR2, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality platform, the original Oculus Rift, and Bigscreen Beyond. It now holds the sixth position among the most favored VR headsets, trailing the Pico 4 by a mere 0.37% and the Meta Quest 3 by a larger margin of 24.14%.
The 3.72% rise for the Steam Frame represents the largest single jump in the October survey. Conversely, the Oculus Quest 2 experienced the most significant decline, losing 3.57% of its market share. This shift underscores a dynamic and competitive VR headset market.
Despite its official release on September 18 and pre-orders commencing on September 14, many buyers received their headsets later. This suggests that the observed increase in usage is partly due to ongoing sales throughout October and the fulfillment of initial orders. Furthermore, both the 256 GB and 1 TB models of the Steam Frame are currently backordered, indicating sustained demand and potentially further growth as supply catches up.
It is important to approach the Steam Hardware Survey statistics with a degree of caution. As an opt-in survey, it provides a general snapshot of usage trends among a subset of Steam users, rather than comprehensive data. Monthly fluctuations are common; for example, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, currently the most popular graphics card, saw a modest increase last month, while the RTX 4060 experienced a slight decrease. Nonetheless, the substantial increase for the Steam Frame is a positive indicator for Valve's newest hardware offering within the VR ecosystem.
