Supermodel Carolyn Murphy and designer J.J. Martin have joined forces to launch an exclusive holiday collection named "Sisterhood of Light." This collaboration seamlessly merges La DoubleJ's signature bold and colorful designs with Murphy's preference for a more subdued, minimalist elegance. The collection introduces reimagined versions of La DoubleJ's classic Swing Dress, adorned with shimmering elements and detailed craftsmanship, representing a harmonious blend of their distinct styles. Their unexpected partnership blossomed from a shared personal connection, leading to a creative venture that not only redefines holiday fashion but also reflects Murphy's journey in shaping her unique style narrative.
The genesis of this collaboration was an interesting twist of fate. Carolyn Murphy had recently endured the devastating loss of her residence in the California wildfires, an event that resonated with J.J. Martin, who grew up in the same region. This shared experience forged a bond between them, initially as friends, and later evolving into a professional partnership. Murphy fondly recalls Martin as a much-needed source of cheer during a challenging time, praising her grounded nature and impeccable taste, despite their contrasting fashion philosophies.
While La DoubleJ is renowned for its maximalist and vibrant designs, Murphy generally gravitates towards a more restrained aesthetic. She initially conveyed her minimalist tendencies to Martin, expressing her infrequent use of patterns and prints. Martin, undeterred, embraced this difference, leading to a creative exploration of how to interweave their individual styles into a cohesive collection.
The "Sisterhood of Light" capsule collection offers fresh interpretations of La DoubleJ's beloved designs, with a particular focus on the iconic Swing Dress. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the A-line maxi dress, which was the brand's inaugural dress silhouette, is transformed into the dazzling Super Swing. This show-stopping piece features embroidered dégradé sequins that transition from silver to gold, exuding a radiant charm. The luminous theme continues with the Opera Swing, crafted from a gilded fil coupé jacquard, and the mod-inspired Mini Supreme Swing, intricately embroidered with hibiscus motifs, showcasing a rich tapestry of textures and patterns.
To capture the essence of the collection, Murphy modeled the designs at the picturesque Villa Tarlarini. Photographer Kate Bellm expertly documented the campaign against a backdrop of lush natural scenery and breathtaking seascapes. For the photoshoot, Murphy drew inspiration from fashion icons like Marisa Berenson and Veruschka, evident in her distinctive wavy 1970s hairstyle. This creative direction underscored her vision of crafting an enchanting world for the festive season and beyond, infusing the collection with a sense of escapism and fantasy.
This collaboration provided Murphy with a unique opportunity to venture beyond her established style boundaries and engage in a creative endeavor while rebuilding her life. Reflecting on her fashion journey, she identifies as a devotee of early 90s style, cherishing classic pieces with a modern twist. She cites Carolyn Bessette, a friend and icon, along with Narciso Rodriguez, as early influences who shaped her sartorial aspirations. Having spent years being styled by others, Murphy has now reached a point where she actively defines her own style, embracing a consistent and personal approach to fashion.
