The festival commences with the premiere of "The Hummingbird Paints Fragrant Songs," a poignant documentary directed by Èlia Gasull Balada and Matteo Norzi. This film introduces viewers to Sara Flores, a 75-year-old Indigenous artist from the Peruvian Amazon, as her unique artistic vision transcends cultural boundaries and enters the international contemporary art scene.
Concluding the festival's screenings is Kate Davis and David Heilbroner's "Totality." This feature delves into the profound communal experience of the 2024 solar eclipse, illustrating how a fleeting celestial event can inspire collective introspection and a re-evaluation of individual lives within the vastness of the universe.
Barbara Kopple's powerful documentary, "Union Town," has been selected as the festival's centerpiece. The film follows three dedicated workers as they strive for improved working conditions, advocate for union representation, and seek fundamental human dignity in their professional lives.
The festival's Special Presentations segment will showcase world premieres that shed light on intriguing aspects of history and human nature. Joe Berlinger's "Primetime Preacher$" offers a look into the world of 1980s televangelism, while Abhay and Halavah Sofsky's "Palace of Gold" explores the rise and fall of the controversial New Vrindaban commune.
This year's main slate boasts an impressive selection of 115 feature-length documentaries, including 26 global premieres and 27 U.S. premieres. Beyond the screenings, attendees can look forward to more than 200 films and dozens of interactive events, offering unparalleled opportunities to engage with filmmakers and delve deeper into their artistic visions.
Jaie LaPlante, the artistic director of DOC NYC, emphasizes the festival's commitment to presenting a diverse range of stories. He highlights the extraordinary breadth and artistry of this year's lineup, noting that from intimate portraits to urgent investigations, the films provide fresh and insightful perspectives on the world and its inhabitants.
