Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy's leadership at Warner Bros. is drawing to a close. Industry sources confirm their departure from David Ellison's new management team as the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, a landmark $110 billion agreement, is set to finalize on October 6th.
Reports indicate that Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, current heads of Paramount's film division, are slated to oversee both merged movie studios. Each studio is projected to release approximately 30 films annually, aligning with the terms of the merger. The specific details regarding De Luca and Abdy's potential involvement in a transitional capacity remain undefined.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of a successful period for De Luca and Abdy at Warner Bros. Their contracts were renewed just a year prior by WBD CEO and President David Zaslav, a testament to the studio's strong performance. Under their guidance, Warner Bros. achieved considerable box office success with films such as Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," "A Minecraft Movie," and "Weapons." Furthermore, the studio equaled an industry record by securing 11 Academy Awards from an impressive 30 nominations, including a Best Picture win for Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another."
David Ellison is maintaining a degree of confidentiality regarding the comprehensive details of the new leadership structure. While Cindy Holland has exited as Paramount+'s streaming head, official confirmation regarding Casey Bloys's anticipated ascent to the top streaming role within the combined organization is still pending. However, it has been disclosed that Ellison has enlisted former Mattel CEO Ynon Kriez to co-lead the venture, focusing on daily operations and the seamless integration of the two businesses.
The impending executive changes were first brought to light by Puck. Both Paramount and Warner Bros. have yet to issue official statements in response to requests for comment, leaving the industry to speculate on the full implications of this significant shift.
