Netflix's celebrated film, "La Bola Negra," is significantly increasing its presence in theaters, expanding to its widest release to date. This strategic move highlights the film's growing popularity and critical acclaim as it navigates the competitive awards season. The drama, known for its exploration of queer identity, has already made a considerable impact, both commercially and critically, setting new benchmarks for non-English language films.
Initially projected for a more modest theatrical run of 200 to 300 locations, "La Bola Negra" has now reached 465 domestic theaters. This expansion is a testament to its compelling narrative and powerful performances. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film features a talented cast including Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau, who bring to life a story spanning three distinct timelines, delving into themes of identity and self-discovery.
The film's financial performance has been noteworthy, accumulating over $1.3 million domestically within its first three weekends. Its opening weekend saw an impressive per-screen average, ranking as the second-highest for a non-English language film, surpassed only by 2019's "Parasite." This success underscores its broad appeal, particularly among younger audiences, with half of its initial U.S. viewers being under 35.
Beyond its domestic success, "La Bola Negra" has also achieved significant milestones in Spain, where it currently stands as the third-highest-grossing Spanish film of all time and is among the top 10 highest-grossing films across all languages in the country. The ensemble cast, including acclaimed actors such as Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, and Lola Dueñas, has been instrumental in its widespread recognition.
The film's journey began with its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where its directors were honored with the Best Director award. Since then, it has continued to collect accolades, including the audience award at the London Film Festival, the TIFF People's Choice Award, and the San Sebastián International Film Festival audience award. These recognitions firmly position "La Bola Negra" as a strong contender for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, having been selected as Spain's official entry.
Adding to its prestige, pop icon Madonna publicly endorsed "La Bola Negra" on Instagram, urging her vast following to experience the film, calling it "a transformational experience." The film has also received critical acclaim, holding an 86% critics score and an impressive 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Richard Lawson, a critic for The Hollywood Reporter, lauded it as "vivid and transporting." Following its theatrical debut on October 16, the movie is set to premiere on Netflix on December 2, marking a 47-day theatrical window—the longest for any Netflix original film to date.
"La Bola Negra" is broadening its cinematic reach, reflecting its significant critical and commercial success. With its compelling story, strong performances, and numerous awards, the film is poised for continued impact as it concludes its theatrical run and moves to streaming platforms, solidifying its place as a notable achievement in global cinema.
